International Women’s Day (IWD) is a time to reflect on and celebrate the remarkable achievements of women across the globe. Here at Regis Aged Care, we have countless women in all roles, departments, and locations who are vital to our residents’ care and the running of our organisation. We’re fortunate to have two incredible women leading up our Ayr and Home Hill Homes, with Helen Davey as our General Manager at Ayr and Paulette Brosnan as our General Manager at Home Hill. Bringing a wealth of experience, both have been role models to other women in the organisation and have guided their respective Homes through the difficulties presented by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The aged care sector is a natural fit for both Helen and Paulette. Helen was inspired to work in the industry after becoming a registered nurse in her mid-twenties and still loves it. Twenty-five years later, she notes that “I have the privilege of caring for and connecting with the elderly in my community and making a difference in their lives.” Paulette used her background in education to take on a new challenge in aged care, where she continues to positively impact our residents’ daily lives.
To Helen and Paulette, IWD is a time to focus on the contributions that women make each day, as well as to “acknowledge the achievements of ordinary everyday women past, present, and future, who through their strength, courage, and resilience have inspired and created endless opportunities for all women.” At Regis, we’re proud to promote opportunities within the organisation and believe in the importance of drawing attention to the everyday efforts that women make to our community.
The theme of this year’s IWD is #BreakTheBias, and we’re honoured to say that women at Regis break down stereotypes and challenge bias. Helen agrees that it is excellent that “women, especially young women, are encouraged to apply for all roles.” To Paulette, it is essential that “we encourage women to be strong and independent, and to work out solutions to any problems.” Through collaboration, we can maintain the fair, diverse, and inclusive environment at Regis, with women such as Helen and Paulette leading the way.
When asked what advice they would give to women pursuing a career in aged care, Helen says to “simply have a go because the aged care sector is so rewarding.” Paulette adds that “there are many varied and diverse opportunities. It will also be the most heart-warming work that you can ever experience. My only regret is that I didn’t leap into the sector sooner!”
While Helen initially didn’t think she had what it took to be successful, she put in the effort, and it paid off. “I am proud of my journey. It was tough and a lot of hard work but rewarding to be able to grow in a job that I love.” We think Helen and Paulette are the perfect embodiment of the IWD values.
