Regis Port Stephens residents Audrey and Darrell Barry moved into the Home in July 2022. Having been married for almost 70 years, it was vital that the couple retained their closeness. After moving to Port Stephens from Queensland to be close to their family, the draw of Regis’ incredible facilities took hold and appealed to their needs. Staying together, as they have been for most of their lives, was critical, and Regis’ companion room was the ideal option for them.
Audrey, 87, and Darrell, 90, are inseparable and have never slept apart. They rely on each other for company, which makes their companion room perfect for their needs. The couple feels “safe and secure” and enjoys regular interactions with employees and other residents and the important medical attention on hand.
When they’re together, Audrey and Darrell love nothing more than sharing lunch in the dining room and socialising with other residents. Happy Hour, reminiscing cherished memories, and the News & Views program are highlights for the couple, who can always be seen near each other. Individually, Darrell enjoys jumping on the Regis bus for outings any chance he gets, while Audrey loves the social and competitive Bingo tournaments hosted in the Home.
The couple recently celebrated Darrell’s 90th birthday surrounded by close family members and a delectable cake to really mark the occasion. In March 2023, the couple will celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary, a milestone that is representative of their devotion and unwavering companionship for each other.
Audrey and Darrell continue to have a tight bond, and despite the years that have passed, they have remained close and by each other’s side. What do they credit to their long and happy partnership? “Being best friends and always being there for each other.”
