A transformative initiative known as the Hands Project has been quietly making waves at Regis Gatton. This innovative approach has evolved into a powerful tool for enhancing the quality of care within the Home.

The Hands Project started with the Home taking photographs of hands and sharing personal stories unique to that resident. They wanted to emphasise the individuality of each resident and explore their lived experiences. These photographs and stories have been framed and proudly displayed within the Home and allow other residents, families and employees to pause and connect as they pass by.

“The project beautifully illustrates how a person’s unique hands tells the story of their life,” said Regis Gatton General Manager Shenaz Bibi.

Employees at Regis Gatton feel empowered to use this tool to create a more meaningful connection with the residents they care for. With a deeper understanding of the individual, residents benefit from an increased sense of comfort and trust with their carer.

The project has evolved to become more than just photographs and stories. The team has found that the simple gesture of handholding can provide reassurance, comfort and a sense of companionship.

As this approach has been integrated into daily care routines, the Regis Gatton team has seen notable improvements in the emotional and physical wellbeing of residents.

Residents and team members have welcomed the Hands Project approach with open arms, acknowledging its ability to foster trust, reduce stress and enhance overall wellbeing. From calming emotional behaviours to reinforcing encouragement, the benefits of touch are far reaching.

This initiative illustrates the importance of human connection and compassion within aged care.
