Aged Care Employee Day (ACED) is a chance for all of us to put a spotlight on the tireless efforts of Australia’s amazing aged care employees – from nurses to carers, allied health professionals to lifestyle coordinators. Now in its sixth year, ACED – hosted by ACCPA – celebrates the more than 370,000 aged and community care employees who provide support to over 1.5 million older and ageing Australians.
This year, we shine a spotlight on some of our passionate employees who put care at the forefront of everything they do.
Tan Nguyen’s (Regis Blackburn, Victoria) career path is as rich and diverse as his heritage. Originally from Vietnam and a qualified chef, Tan was drawn to the field of aged care by a deep-seated desire to enhance the lives of the elderly. His journey was inspired by his mother, who recognised his potential to make a meaningful impact.
“It was my mother that helped me to pursue my passion. Like her, I wanted to support seniors and really make a difference by enhancing their quality of life,” Tan said.
Tan has been a Personal Care Assistant at Regis for over two and a half years. During that time, he has found an environment that celebrates his diverse skills and background. He has also had excellent support from his colleagues who have been eager to share their knowledge, helping him navigate the challenges of aged care.
“The team I work with is extremely supportive. I love the home-like environment where I’ve gotten to know everyone, learn their life stories and develop relationships with their families and caregivers.”
“I’ve been able to strengthen my skills in teamwork and leadership, as well as enhance my communication abilities. This has helped me thrive in a setting that values collaboration and mutual respect.”
“I’ve also learned a lot from the residents and their families I work with; hearing their unique life stories has enriched my perspective and appreciation of the experiences that shape us all.”
Tan’s journey from chef to Personal Care Assistant is a testament to the power of passion and the importance of purpose, showing you can find a path that leads to both personal and professional fulfillment.
“I feel happier and believe I’m achieving something significant in my career. I’ve really learned to listen without judgement and have developed a far stronger sense of empathy.”
“Aged care is vital for the wellbeing of elderly people. It’s a place where you can truly make a difference by providing good care to those who need it most,” Tan said.
