In a world increasingly focused on sustainability, upcycling has emerged as a fashionable and eco-friendly trend. However, for many residents at Regis Aged Care Homes in Western Australia, upcycling is not just a trend—it’s a way of life they’ve embraced long before it became popular.

Selected as designers for the 2024 Eco Fashion Week Australia (EFWA), residents from multiple Regis Aged Care Homes have showcased their creativity, wisdom, and the timeless benefits of recycling. Launched in 2017, EFWA has quickly become the largest eco fashion week in the world in terms of length, number of eco designers, and events, all powered by the local community and volunteers.

“Even before upcycling became a buzzword, our residents have known and practiced its benefits for generations, often out of necessity. In these tougher economic times, we can all learn something from that,” said Jacki Salgado, Lifestyle Coordinator, at Regis Woodlands. “From mending clothes to repurposing household items, they have always found innovative ways to extend the life of their belongings. It is heartening to see this resourcefulness now being adopted by local and international designers and celebrated on runways.”

“Our residents were far more frugal in their day,” added Office Manager, Tshering Dema. “Driven by the need to save money, they often reused materials. Upcycling can be cost-effective, offering financial benefits to individuals and communities. Additionally, it provided them with an outlet for creative expression, allowing many to gain lifelong skills and enjoy a rewarding pastime.”

The residents at Regis have transformed old clothes into stunning new fashion pieces. Their designs not only reflect their rich life experiences but also demonstrate the endless possibilities of upcycling. Working alongside Dr. Zuhal Kuvan-Mills, residents have brought their design and dressmaking skills to the fore. This project is a testament to their enduring creativity and commitment to sustainability.

Inspired by Western Australia’s wildflower, residents created a collection of 13 outstanding and gorgeous pieces, with one dress featured in a world record-breaking event attempt at Busselton Pier. The other unique and innovative pieces were showcased at events and parades across the state during November.
