Aged Care Employee Day (ACED) is a chance for all of us to put a spotlight on the tireless efforts of Australia’s dedicated aged care employees – from nurses to Home Support Workers, allied health professionals to lifestyle coordinators. Now in its sixth year, ACED – hosted by ACCPA – celebrates the more than 370,000 aged and community care employees who provide support to over 1.5 million older and ageing Australians.

This year, we shine a spotlight on some of our passionate employees who put care at the forefront of everything they do.

Michelle Knights, General Manager at Home Care Mildura, believes in making a positive impact daily on the lives of her team and clients. Her caring nature and dynamic leadership style ensure that individuals are respected for their differences and individuality. “It’s about being in the moment, listening and being grateful,” she says. Michelle emphasises the importance of responsiveness to the needs of both team members and clients, whether it’s through positive feedback, resolving issues or acknowledging difficult times.

“I strive to be a positive role model, holding myself and others accountable to the values of Regis—optimism, passion, respect and integrity. These values ensure that clients receive the quality service they deserve,” Michelle explains. “The gift of time and service goes a long way to making people feel valued and cared for, and this is our daily aim.”

Inspired to Care

Michelle’s journey in aged care began with a deep-rooted desire to support others, a sentiment that has given her immense personal satisfaction. Starting her career in nursing, she explored various community service areas, encompassing all ages and stages of life. Through this journey, Michelle discovered that giving back to older people is her way of expressing gratitude for the teachings imparted by the elders in her life. “Those who have taken the time to care and nurture me have given me the patience, perseverance, and resilience I have today.”

Lessons from Older People

Working with older people has imparted wisdom to Michelle. “There is nothing new under the sun!” she says, noting that everyone experiences trials and tribulations, with the key being how we respond. Michelle’s grandmother taught her that “civility costs you nothing” and “manners maketh the man.” She has learned that happiness must come from within and that treating others with kindness and support will bring comfort in times of need. “I’ve learned that no one or nothing can make you happy; happiness has to come from inside,” she reflects. “If we treat others the way we want to be treated, with kindness and support, we too will feel comforted in our time of need.”

Building Strong Connections

Michelle has formed strong connections with many clients, finding that human connection is often what they seek. She believes in the philosophy of “live and let live” and enjoys meeting diverse individuals who allow her to exercise her strengths. “I enjoy meeting people who teach me something new, like how to prune a mulberry tree or preserve olives,” she says.

“There are certain people with whom you just gel, and I have certainly met many of these along the way and am grateful to have done so,” Michelle adds.

Recognising the Team

Michelle wishes to recognise her team at Home Care Mildura for their dedication to the people they care for. “They have shown me support and friendship, which makes coming to work a happy place to be,” she notes.

“I am thankful for the extended national team who are supportive and generous to each other,” Michelle says.

On this Aged Care Employee Day, we celebrate Michelle Knights and her incredible contributions to Regis and the lives of those she touches.
