When Talwinder Bains first joined Regis as a Food Service Assistant back in 2017, he couldn’t have imagined just how far his career in aged care would take him. Fast forward seven years, and Talwinder is now a Registered Nurse and Clinical Care Coordinator at Regis Burnside in Adelaide – a shining example of how dedication, support and a genuine passion for aged care can lead to meaningful career progression.
Talwinder’s entry into the aged care sector was inspired by a friend who was already working at Regis Shenley Manor in Camberwell. With no prior healthcare experience, Talwinder made the leap, starting as a Food Service Assistant and quickly finding his calling.
“I was fascinated by the stories residents would share,” he says. “Every day brought something new, and I found myself truly connecting with the people I was caring for.”
His early experiences helping care for his grandmother also sparked a deep respect for the elderly and reinforced his desire to build a career in this field.
After a short time in hospitality, Talwinder transitioned into the role of Personal Care Assistant (PCA), before relocating to South Australia in 2019. It was during his time as a PCA at Regis Burnside that he began studying to become a Registered Nurse – a major milestone in his aged care career.
“Working as a PCA while studying helped me understand aged care on a deeper level,” Talwinder explains. “I felt supported every step of the way.”
From leadership programs to mentorship and ongoing clinical training, Regis provided the foundation for Talwinder to thrive. He credits these opportunities – and the encouragement of his leaders – with helping him develop the confidence and skills to take on more responsibility.
Now in a leadership role, Talwinder reflects on how far he’s come. One moment that stands out was leading his team through a critical care situation – a real test of his clinical knowledge and decision-making.
“It was the moment I truly saw how much I’d grown,” he says. “Not just technically, but as a leader.”
Today, he continues to make a real impact – supporting residents with both professionalism and compassion, and mentoring colleagues along the way.
