Mary and Neil Affleck are a testament to enduring love and commitment. Residents of Regis Blackburn since 2021, Neil, who will turn 101 in November, and Mary, 95, recently celebrated a remarkable milestone
On, 9 October they marked their 76th wedding anniversary, a milestone that few couples achieve. This celebration is not just a testament to their love but also to their resilience and dedication to each other.
Their journey together started in the most unassuming of places. Mary was working at her uncle’s petrol station, and Neil, whose family owned a trucking business, would come in almost daily to refuel. It was during these routine visits that sparked their life together. In 1948, Mary and Neil were married at St Mark’s in Collingwood, and the reception was in the church hall.
When asked for advice for young couples, Neil humorously remarked, “Don’t get married,” while Mary countered with, “Do get married.” For Mary and Neil, the secret to a long and happy marriage lies in shared interests and mutual respect. Both avid supporters of the Collingwood football club, they also enjoyed going to the races together.
At Regis Blackburn, Mary and Neil find joy in simply being together. Neil, takes pleasure in pushing Mary in her wheelchair each day, finds happiness in these small acts of love and care.
All at Regis Blackburn were delighted to share in the celebrations with Mary, Neil and their family earlier this week. Congratulations to you both!
