On this year’s International Day of Older Persons, Regis is thrilled to announce we are broadening our longstanding intergenerational programs with a new pilot initiative in partnership with the LifeChanger Foundation. This initiative is designed to foster meaningful connections between youth and older Australians, creating mutually beneficial experiences for both individuals and the broader community.

The innovative program, co-led by LifeChanger and Regis’ National Lifestyle and Engagement team, will bring together students from a local high school in Meadowbrook, Queensland, and residents at Regis’ Salisbury Home. Over the next six weeks, students and residents will be paired to foster meaningful interactions that promote understanding and strengthen intergenerational bonds. At the conclusion of the program, we will assess its impact and report on the benefits, with the aim of expanding the partnership across other Regis communities.

Older people play an integral part in strengthening our communities as workers, carers, and volunteers. With life expectancy at birth now exceeding 75 years in half of the world’s countries—25 years longer than in 1950—and older persons projected to outnumber youth globally by 2030, finding greater opportunities for intergenerational connection is paramount. *

Yvonne, a resident at Regis Salisbury, said “I can’t wait to meet the students to see what the next generation have planned for the future.” While other residents participating in the program are interested in learning what type of music the students listen to, discuss new technologies, and are simply delighted to be involved in the pilot program.

Intergenerational relationships are crucial for our broader community. Programs such as this cultivate respect and appreciation for diverse age groups, enhancing social cohesion and fostering a culture of inclusivity.

On 1 October, we celebrate the United Nations International Day of Older Persons, a day dedicated to raising awareness about the opportunities and challenges faced by older individuals and recognising their invaluable contributions to society. At Regis, we hold this day close to our hearts as we strive to ensure that our residents and clients grow old with dignity and purpose.

Please join us in celebrating the vital role of older people in our communities and supporting initiatives that bring generations together for a brighter, more inclusive future.
