Sushila has always had a desire to help others, but it wasn’t until her on-the-job placement that she discovered that a career in aged care brings a sense of fulfilment in knowing that your work directly impacts people’s lives.
“The idea of supporting older adults in maintaining their dignity and quality of life, especially when they may be facing health challenges, was incredibly meaningful to me,” she said.
Sushila began her journey with Regis in February 2022 as an Assistant in Nursing (AIN) at Regis Belmore before continuing her role at Regis Hornsby later that year.
Working as an AIN has complemented her nursing studies, providing hands-on experiences that have deepened her understanding of resident care, strengthened her communication skills, teamwork, resident assessments, and clinical decision-making.
Sushila finds it deeply rewarding and fulfilling to see the positive impact she makes in residents’ daily lives, whether it’s helping with personal care, offering emotional support, or simply being there when they need someone.
She said, “Witnessing residents’ positive feedback and hearing a family member express gratitude uplift and affirm the value of my role.” With colleagues, the collaborative efforts in residents’ care, supporting each other, and creating a positive work environment foster a sense of camaraderie and teamwork.
“The appreciation and trust that I earn from them boosts my sense of belonging and motivation,” she added.
Sushila advises those looking to grow their career in aged care to be genuinely passionate about the work. “Aged care is about more than just physical care; it’s about making residents feel valued and comfortable. Building rapport, trust, and respectful communication with residents, families, and colleagues is crucial for creating a positive work environment and fostering professional growth,” she said.
