We had the incredible honor of hosting the 2024 Melbourne Cup tour at Regis East Malvern, and what a day it was! Our residents donned their finest racing attire, held the prestigious cup, and shared heartwarming stories of past Melbourne Cup victories.

A special highlight was having Pat Hyland, the 1985 Melbourne Cup-winning jockey and a cherished resident at Regis, reflect on his illustrious racing career. His interview with Channel 9 was a trip down memory lane, filled with inspiring achievements and unforgettable moments.

Retired jockey and horse trainer, Hyland is best known for riding What A Nuisance to victory in the 1985 Melbourne Cup. Joined by his family, Hyland talked about his career which spanned more than 30 years. He rode 2,382 winners, including the ‘big four’ of the Australian turf – the Melbourne Cup, Caulfield Cup, Cox Plate and Golden Slipper.

Touring with the Melbourne Cup, which is valued at over $750,000, were cup ambassadors and former 1970 Melbourne Cup winning jockey Midge Didham and his son John Didham.

This event saw East Malvern residents joined by those from Armadale, Brighton, Blackburn and Shenley Manor Homes. Regis’ Inter-Home community events are designed to support residents so they remain connected with the broader community and continue to gain new experiences.

It’s days like these that remind us of the vibrant community spirit we have at Regis.
